Have a checklist of all your gear, and ensure it is with you before you head out. Furthermore, your gear needs to be in the best condition possible in order to increase your chances of success.

You need to be dressed in comfortable clothes, and wear a good strong pair of shoes which will provide traction as soon as you start reeling in.

If you choose to fish during the day, it is advised that you wear a hat, sunglasses and apply enough sunscreen to protect you from the sun’s harmful rays. If you choose to fish early in the morning or late in the evening, be sure to carry bug spray as well as a warm coat or jacket in case it gets too chilly.

To take care of your hunger as you fish, carry along some food or snacks, with a couple of drinks. Once you’re geared up and ready to go, you will need a few tips to help you along the way.

Below are the 4 proven techniques that you can use to help you catch the biggest catfish in your area.

1. Familiarize yourself with the area you’ve chosen to fish in. This way, you will be able to quickly find the location of the fish. In most cases, it is normal to find the biggest catfish lurking in the depths of deep waters. However, in some locations, they can easily be caught along shallow shores. River mouths, streams and on sandbars have been stated to be the best places to find giant catfish. Flatheads are especially known to swim in holes that can be found around the edges.

2. Catfish are known to be active at night or very early in the morning while it is still dark. You can still fish during the day, but you will have better chances of catching the giant fish at night, when they are at their most active. The best times have been said to be between midnight and 3 a.m.

3. When it comes to fishing for giant catfish, it is advised that you have a sturdy net with you. You could catch the fish, but the tricky part may be hauling it to the boat or to the shore. Having a net on hand can help reduce the strain of carrying the fish.

4. For giant catfish, only live bait will do. In fact, the bigger the bait, the bigger the catfish you are likely to catch. Giant catfish are known to be partial to bait that is easily found in their habitat. So you will need to have a net on hand to catch the bait. Using bait found in their natural home will increase your chances of catching a giant catfish.

5. You can use the techniques mentioned above with other small tips that will tip the odds in your favor. A few of them are mentioned below.

There are different types of catfish, and each of them has a season in which they can easily be found. For instance, the blue catfish or flathead are abundant during summer and winter.

The lower water levels and the increased temperature will make the fish more active. In the colder months, they will be actively hunting for food which is hard to find during such weather.

Just to be cautious, carry extra gear you might need because anything can happen. You wouldn’t want your fishing adventure to be ruined simply because your rod snapped into two. Having a spare on hand would be helpful if that were to happen.

Also, use big tackles when handling giant catfish. Remember, it is in their nature for these fish to be aggressive, and you can be sure that a giant catfish will definitely put up an impressive fight. Use circle hooks for even better results.

You will sweat and struggle but at the end of it fishing for giant catfish will be an experience you are not likely to forget.
